What’s That Sound Coming From My Air Conditioner Mean?

Spring is just around the corner, or at least officially because the weather has been getting stranger over the years. While that Spring weather can get a little warm, nothing like turning on your AC for a few minutes can’t help. However, while you switch on your AC, you notice, uh oh, it’s starting to make odd sounds, and you’re wondering what is going on! Luckily for you, we’re here to break down some of the more common strange sounds you may hear from your AC and what they mean!

Loud Clanging

In some situations, homeowners may notice that their air conditioner can loud clanging noises that do not seem to dissipate throughout the day with extended usage. More often than not, these clanging sounds can result from loose-fitting components, usually the compressor, that begins to hit the surrounding compartment, leading to that clanging sound.

While the fix can be oversimplified as tightening a few screws, the process involved can be pretty intricate as checking surrounding components without damaging them is what our professionals are trained to do.

What If I Hear Rattling Instead?

It can be tricky to distinguish rattling sounds from clanging sounds, as these words are not necessarily professional terms, but rattling can sometimes be related to loose components or compressor issues. Luckily, more minor rattling sounds can be the sign of debris falling into the HVAC system that thankfully can be fixed with a quick cleaning, but always make sure to call a professional to rule out any system damage.

Hissing And Gurgling

The second you hear a hissing sound in your home coming from your HVAC system, give us a call immediately! The problem with hissing sounds is that you have an air duct leak that has progressed rapidly or possibly dealing with significant malfunctions in the compressor, refrigerant lines, or other components.

Sometimes this hissing sound can be accompanied by a gurgling or bubbling sound, which can indicate an issue with your system’s refrigerant lines or issues related to condensation.

Humming Or Buzzing

A properly functioning HVAC system should be relatively quiet, so if you start noticing a low-level buzzing or humming sound, don’t ignore your HVAC!

The persistent sound can be related to issues with loose-fitting components, condenser fan motor not properly functioning, or possibly your HVAC system freezing. We’d be surprised to see a frozen HVAC in the middle of spring, but life is full of surprises.

In some cases, you may have issues with your HVAC system’s circuit breaker not functioning or even a faulty relay switch. When it comes to electrical problems, you do not want to ignore them because the longer they go unattended, the more you risk electrical shorts and system failure.

It can be challenging to determine the sole cause of that buzzing or humming from a glance, but it is easy to pick up the phone and call our technicians to prevent expensive repairs down the line.
