Why does your A/C keep freezing up?

There are several reasons why your air conditioning (A/C) unit may be freezing up. Some of the most common causes include:

Low refrigerant levels: If your A/C unit is low on refrigerant, it can cause the evaporator coils to freeze. This is because the refrigerant is responsible for absorbing heat from the air passing over the evaporator coils. Without enough refrigerant, the coils will get too cold and start to freeze.

Dirty air filter: A dirty air filter can restrict the flow of air through the A/C unit, causing the evaporator coils to freeze. This is because the air filter is responsible for trapping dust and other contaminants, and if it becomes too clogged, it can reduce the amount of air reaching the evaporator coils.

Malfunctioning blower motor: The blower motor is responsible for circulating air through the A/C unit. If it is not functioning properly, it can cause the evaporator coils to freeze up.

Improperly sized A/C unit: If your A/C unit is too small for the size of your home, it may struggle to cool your home effectively, causing the evaporator coils to freeze.

Improper installation: If your A/C unit was not installed correctly, it can cause various problems, including freezing of the evaporator coils.

To prevent your A/C unit from freezing up, it is important to regularly maintain and service it. This includes replacing the air filter, checking the refrigerant levels, and ensuring that all components are functioning properly. It is also important to have your A/C unit professionally serviced at least once a year to catch any issues before they become major problems.
